Colosseum, Rome
A large elliptical amphitheatre, the Colosseum is set in the heart of Rome and represents one of the greatest works of Roman architecture. Capable of occupying 50,000 spectators, the Colosseum was mainly used for gladiatorial contests, but also for public spectacles such as mock sea battles and animal hunts.
